Overlooked Truths When Guiding An Owner to Exit

In this discussion, exit planning advisor Julie Keyes will discuss how we, as trusted advisors on our clients’ team, can help prepare business owners for a successful transition from their business by addressing the often-overlooked truths of preparing them as family, for a major life transition, legally, financially, and for the long-term.

Learning Objectives:

  • Preparing the owner as a family: Looking at things from the perspective of their spouse and/or children and helping them visualize what life will look like as a family after the exit
  • Preparing the owner for a major life transition: Helping them with the sense of loss of control & identity and looking for new life opportunities (philanthropy, family, society & spiritually)
  • Preparing the owner financially: Navigating the unspoken change from accumulation to preservation mindset and discussing the importance of liquidity, proper planning and collaborating with their trusted team of advisors
  • Preparing the owner for the long term:  The new roles their advisors will play and the difference between short-term and long-term advisory team members (and why both are needed)

Julie Keyes is astute at helping business owners create and implement solid working plans for their companies and personal growth.  Recognized as one of the top coaches in Minnesota, Julie brings her training and 30 years of hands-on experience as co-founder of three businesses.

Her personal values align well with her passion for delivering more than she is paid to do.  As a sought-after business adviser, speaker, and presenter, she never “tells” or lectures her clients or audiences, rather she engages them with thought-provoking and actionable ideas and content they can use and apply to their business and their life.

In 1989, Julie began her entrepreneurial journey and for three decades she experienced many of the same situations that her business owner clients are facing today.  She understands when they are feeling along, overwhelmed, and not knowing where to turn on big decisions.  Employee issues, growing pains, lack of capital, and the day-to-day challenges business owners encounter are not new to her.  Julie’s finance background and marketing degree have proven to add great value in guiding and supporting her clients.  Her designation as a Certified Exit Planning Advisor (CEPA) has been an integral advantage to her clients who are looking to exit their business in the near future.

Julie is the mother of four adult children and loves spending time with them.  She enjoys outdoor sports, music and being by the water.  Her involvement in the community over the years has resulted in many professional connections that have become good friends and referral sources.  She serves on several Boards for local Twin Cities businesses and the Anoka Area Chamber of Commerce.
